This guided bike tour connects the vibrant cultural city of Leipzig with the impressive natural beauty of the surrounding lake district. What is now a popular recreational area was, just a few decades ago, dominated by open-pit lignite mines. Our route highlights this extraordinary transformation of the landscape.
From Leipzig’s green urban areas and their small waterways, the trail leads us through the floodplain landscape out to the large lakes south of the city. Here, pristine waterways and well-developed bike paths connect the city, nature, and history in a unique way.
The first stop on our 3-Lakes Tour is the popular Cospudener See, with its long lakeside promenade and views across the open water. We continue on to Markkleeberger Lake, which is known today for recreation, water sports, and events. Finally, we reach Störmthaler Lake, where the vastness of the new lake landscape can be experienced in a particularly impressive way.
Along the way, you’ll hear fascinating stories about the era of lignite mining, the region’s structural transformation, and the formation of today’s Leipzig 'Neuseenland' (new lake district). At the same time, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and experience the unique atmosphere of this region by bike.
This tour is ideal for anyone who wants to combine nature, history, and gentle exercise—and discover one of the most beautiful recreational areas around Leipzig. It invites you to linger and stay a while. A picnic lunch break is included, and there’s plenty of room for team-building activities during company outings. Dragon boat racing or other activities can be incorporated into this tour.
